How Many Zeros In A Billion?

~

FOR ALL THE LIBERAL BRAINIACS who think that Government's Job is to solve all of the problems for every person (especially special interest groups) at the expense of a sound fiscal policy...i think it's good to check our perspective occasionally.

How many zeros in a billion?

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases.

1. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
2. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
3. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
4. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

5. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...

let's take a look at New Orleans ...

It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number...

what does it mean?

A. Well... if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528.
B. Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C. Or... if you are a family of four...your family gets $2,066,012.

HELLO!?!?!? Are all your calculators broken??
what's the big deal about a little more taxes here and there?

That's what they always say.

WAKE UP!!

More tax is equal to less freedom AND the government never spends it as well as you would.

Consider this:

Building Permit Tax
CDL License Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Federal Income Tax (Fed) Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel Permit Tax
Gasoline Tax
Hunting License Tax
Inheritance Tax
Inventory Tax
IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax)
IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)
Liquor Tax
Luxury Tax
Marriage License Tax
Medicare Tax
Property Tax
Real Estate Tax
Service charge taxes
Social Security Tax
Road Usage Tax (Truckers)
Sales Taxes
Recreational Vehicle Tax
School Tax
State Income Tax
State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
Telephone Federal Excise Tax
Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax
Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax
Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax
Telephone State and L ocal Tax
Telephone Usage Charge Tax
Utility Tax
Vehicle License Registration Tax
Vehicle Sales Tax
Watercraft Registration Tax
Well Permit Tax
Workers Compensation Tax

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...

and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened?
Can you spell socialism?
Can you spell fiduciary recklessness?
Can you spell self interest?
Can you spell humanism?
Can you spell liberalism?

Can you spell "politicians"?
yeah, me, too.....

I am glad you like numbers, but the LA part needs a little fact checking. First, that money was proposed by Landrieu (D) and Vitter (R) for aid to 5 states affected by Katrina, not just New Orleans. And Congress rejected it. So don't worry. your tax dollars are being use to make the Middle East safe, not rebuilding the Gulf South. I am a native New Orleanian, living right outside the city. My mother lives a block from the beach on the Ms. Gulf Coast. I am a conservative republican and I am ashamed of my country and my party.

Facts are painful. I guess if I were in line to potentially get some taxpayer money from the government like doctorj2u I would take any comments including facts offensively. Sarcasm aside, a sad, biased commentary. What will it take Ted? A couple politicians gunned down after voting for a tax increase? The government is a lot like the computer Hal...if it senses an attack it will gun down it's own citizens. I hope I live long enough to see the next American revolution. We may have to substitute blood for tea, and Washington DC for the Boston Harbor, but if the call came...I'd be ready in a minute!

You've got a point Peter, my man. i hope the only revolution we have is at the polls!

I'm no expert but it seems a lot of this started with FDR trying to fix the Depression. Yes it was a huge problem and his solutions did not work but what did last was . .. .you guess it-BIG GOVERNMENT. His tenure was the turning point into huge bureaucracy.

Do Americans have the guts to cut the apron strings?

Americans don't have the guts and they have short memories. 9/11 may as well have been a hundred years ago. The limits to this country's resolve is what can be conquered on Wii, and memory of the next generation lasts only as long as the songs on their ipods.

Actually, none of my family took a dime from the feds. I have volunteered in the cleanup in 3 communities in 2 states. I just don't like ignorance, esp. when trying to suppport a political viewpoint.

excellent comment doctorj2u. I commend your efforts and appreciate the civil reply. I think we're all in agreement that our government is no longer of the people, by the people, and certainly not for the people. Unfortunatly I don't think a vote has nearly enough velocity or can produce the scale of shock and awe we'll need to change it.

i'll check the data and if it's wrong, i apologize. i will say, though, that that does not invalidate the point and a massive amount of money was spent there apart from this appropriation.
