Starving in America?

consider the following report. What are your opinions about this?

Human nature is what it is. We must understand that and deal with it lovingly, appropriately and firmly.

pay special attention to the former vagrant/alcoholic who started a homeless shelter based on work. Handouts of any kind hurt the human spirit and discourage growth. Another irrefutable truth...

favorite line in that whole thing -
"misguided compassion".
Once again Stossel hits it squarely on the head

I love John Stossel. Fabulous clip. Thanks for sharing. And can I just say how angry I was watching the older man with the kid? They're sitting there laughing the day away. Disgrace. And the guy smoking a cigarette holding a sign? Makes my blood boil. And the guy who said something to the effect, "Should have given me a $20 that snot". Excuse me? He should have given you nothing!!

I must jump on the point that was brought up about the mentally ill and handicapped. My adopted brother would be the type of person who would be out on the street due to his bipolar and many, many other issues. There are legitimate cases. I do not believe drug or alcohol addiction is one of them. I also do not believe they are an illness. I cringe every time I hear someone equate alcoholism to cancer. They say they are illnesses. Ah, no! My MIL and FIL never did a thing to bring about their cancers and deaths. They would have done anything to prolong their lives unlike those who abuse drugs and alcohol.

Sorry this is so long. I hope I did not break a blogging rule! :)

Still, I cannot deny what I know from the scriptures: Mosiah 4
For behold, are we not all beggars?

Imparting of my substance does actually encourage growth, being the hand that does receive.

i agree with you on that point and that's the important nuance that HAS to be continually defined. That is the technique that Liberals use. There is a difference between charity and handouts. would you give your child anything they ask for whenever they ask for it and without any responsibility or work? just because someone asks you for something doesn't mean you have to give it to them. If you knew, you were certain, that they were going to use the money to drink or use drugs, would you still feel a moral obligation to give? Since we don't have unlimited funds/resources, we have to choose, as the Spirit dictates. Wouldn't you agree?

I completely agree. One thing I would like to say because I have heard these types of rumblings among people I know personally, who have become "institutionalized" by gov. handouts.

Basically the scenario is they believe they are entitled to someone's resources within their extended family because that person obviously has resources that never end. Then they go on to bag on how "stingy" that person is for taking care of their own family and not giving them money.

They don't want time, advice, help finding better employment. They want money. Because again if you are successful you owe it to them. Why? Because the gov. gives them the cheese without anything in return. Then turns around and refunds what little taxes they pay every year and gives them more money for being poor.

I actually overheard a conversation about how to deceive people at a local gov. agency designed to temporarily help those down on their luck. What disgusted me more was this advice to another to be dishonest was given by someone who every two years answers the same questions on honesty that I do with my ecclesiastical leader.

We need to get honest with ourselves before we can get honest with our problems.

You guys are all wrong. I remember the day there was a knock on my door and there was this anonymous guy who told me it was my turn to live the american Dream. He walked me through college registration, job interviews, mortgage applications and business start ups. Do I need to mention I'm the king of sarcasm?

I would love to go on, but it makes me sick just to think about it.

Great work Ted! Let me know if you run for office...you have my vote!
